12,000 FEET MOUNTAIN HIKE
THE HIKING EXPERIENCE
Wave Foundation in collaboration with UNFPA with support from UNICEF, Women In ICT, Global Play Brigade and NTA, organised a one-day 12,000 feet mountain hiking exercise in commemoration of the 16 days activism to end Gender-Based Violence, and to promote the #StopTheCut2030 Campaign. The rationale behind the hiking exercise was to depict the energy, passion and zeal being channeled into the fight against FGC and all forms of VAWG. This hiking exercise involved over one hundred vibrant people, that climbed up the mountains measuring up to 12,000 feet above ground level; at the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
This was done amidst demonstrations using placards that campaigned against Gender-Based Violence and also the 19 Human Rights that promotes community wellbeing which was donated by Tostan International {An International non-profit with branches in Canada, Senegal, Denmark} A media crew from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Radio Nigeria and UNFPA Nigeria were also present for media coverage.
PRE-ACTIVITY AWARENESS
Prior to embarking on the hiking exercise, Wave foundation had engaged the public in series of radio programmes at different radio stations in FCT, Abuja to sensitize on the upcoming event and also the essence to have one voice as a people in order to end all forms of VAWG. In-callers during the radio programme raised concerns about this aged longed tradition being practiced in some parts of the country and urged Wave foundation to stem the tide against Female genitalia Mutilation in interior parts of the country, some also indicated their interest in joining the hiking exercise. Godwin Alechenu was on air as a guest on Hot Fm on December 8th 2022, with Ishioma as presenter, while Amina Danjuma was a guest on a national program on Radio Nigeria-Every Woman on December 14th 2022, with Uju as the presenter, both radio stations have a combined reach of over 250 million and more streamed online.
